  1.    Category 5 Hurricane Maria Slams Dominica on Way to Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico

This will be dated by the time I post this blog post, but I've added it here for the record.

  2.    'Future-Proofing' Texas a Political, Bureaucratic Challenge for Harvey Recovery Czar

… Sharp is constrained in how far he can go in reimagining a more resilient Texas coast. His mandate only pertains to public infrastructure, and not housing, which experts say is crucial to any comprehensive mitigation plan, including buying out particularly flood-prone neighborhoods.

  3.    As Economy Grows, Fed Set to Shrink Bond Holdings – The New York Times

I definitely would have voted "No," but we'll see how it turns out.

It seems ridiculously premature to me. I'd rather fight tangible inflation than the ghost of the Phillips Curve past.

  4.    The Extreme-Weather Defense Nobody Wants – Bloomberg

Oh, and it would make the problem worse. "The emissions in concrete production are huge," ….

However, green energy can be used instead.

  6.    How America's big new landlords faced their first housing disaster

Starwood Waypoint's Young estimates the cost of Harvey to the company will be about $10 million in aggregate, but much of that is covered by insurance. Singelyn said the costs of both Harvey and Irma would be $10 million to $15 million, also largely covered by insurance.

I wonder where they aren't planning to repair or rebuild.

  13.    Donald Trump is killing rules and laws that affect millions. Here are the most important. — Quartz

I include this link because I'm ardently opposed to rolling back risk management in both the public and private sectors. I fail to see the benefits on balance of any of the deregulatory moves mentioned in the linked article. It's my view that the moves are counter-productive across the board. There will be short-term profit gains for a few at the greater and longer-term expense of the vast majority. When it all comes full circle, all will be worse off than they otherwise would have been.

  15.    Seattle's minimum-wage hike didn't boost supermarket prices | Newsroom

"Typically, criticisms of minimum wage policies have been that even if wage goes up it will be offset by increases in prices of consumer goods," said Jennifer Otten, assistant professor of environmental and occupational health sciences and a member of the School's nutritional sciences faculty. "This paper shows that, as of Seattle's wage increase to $13 per hour in 2016, food prices are not going up."

  16.    Follow the Money – Why the Stock Market's Up and Why it Won't Last :: The Market Oracle ::

Bonds and mortgage interest rates have been so historically link that I thought it helpful to post this discussion.

I would say for myself to forget gold and that the smartest money will actually be buying bonds. The reason for that thinking is that the Fed selling bonds is premature and will slow the economy. Once people find that out, they'll move into bonds or back in if they left with the Fed.

The Fed will be left scratching its collective head (again).

  17.    'Against supranationalism: in defence of national sovereignty (and Brexit)' by Bill Mitchell and Thomas Fazi — The Pluto Press Blog — Independent, radical publishing

Wrong. The answer to the EU was not no EU. It was democracy. Rather than retreating to national sovereignty as the first option, we need to push extremely hard for the radical democratization of globalization.

  23.    First Evidence That Offshore Wind Farms Are Changing the Oceans – MIT Technology Review

Slavik and co say one important effect of offshore wind farms is that they act as marine preservation areas, because fishing and bottom trawling is not allowed for safety reasons. So these areas can support greater biodiversity than unprotected areas.

Blue mussels themselves also significantly change this environment. They support other species, since their shells and shell litter are habitats for other creatures. The way blue mussels filter feed makes water clearer, and they concentrate nutrients for other species. This increases "the degree of habitat complexity, encouraging a higher level of species richness," say the team.

Mussels are also food for larger species such as crabs and certain fish, which are themselves prey for seals. So it's no surprise that seals have already begun to migrate to off shore wind farms off the coast of Denmark.

Furthermore, we, as insurance producers, are prohibited by law from disparaging the insurance industry, carriers, other producers, etc. With that in mind, we provide links without staking out positions that violate the law. We provide them solely from a public-policy standpoint wherein we encourage our industry to be sure our profits, etc., are fair and balanced.

We do not necessarily fact checked the contents of every linked article or page, etc.

If we were to conclude any part or parts of our industry are in violation of fundamental fairness and the legal standards of a state or states, we'd address the issue through proper, legal channels. We trust you understand.

The laws that tie our tongues, so to speak, are designed to keep the public from losing confidence in the industry and the regulatory system overseeing it. Insurance commissioners around the country work very hard to analyze rates and to not allow the industry to be damaged by bad rate-settings and changes in coverages. The proper way for people in the industry to deal with such matters is by adhering to the laws, rules, and regulations of the applicable states and within industry associations where such matters may be discussed in private without giving the industry unnecessary black eyes. Ethics is very high on the list in the insurance industry, and we don't want to lose the people's trust. That said, the industry is not perfect; but what industry is?

For our part, we believe in strong regulations and strong regulators.

We welcome your comments and ask you to keep in mind that we cannot and will not reply in any way or ways where any insurance commissioner could rightly say we've violated the law of the given state.

We are allowed to share rating-bureau data/reports and industry-consultant opinions but make clear here that those opinions are theirs and do not necessarily reflect our position.
