Why give a Marxist's view of anything? We experienced the Great Recession, which actually was and remains a depression with lipstick on it. As a result, many people began deeply questioning capitalism. Naturally, many turned to Marx to see what they did or didn't know about Marx's critique and whether it held any thing for them. Therefore, if you aren't aware of what Marx thought and how that might be used to better understand the present, you'll be caught blindsided by Marxist arguments.
To be clear, I am not a Marxist even though I do not disagree with all things Marxism. Much of what Marx wrote concerning capitalism was, and remains, completely valid. He did, however, make mistakes concerning the historical processes that would unfold after his time. I also believe he was profoundly wrong concerning prescriptions.
That said, Julio Huato's post, "On the cost of a decent public sector," says some things concerning why the rich oppose greater equality that I think you should become familiar with. I agree with Julio on that matter.
